Collin Raye's new album "Never going back"
April 30, 2009
The irony of naming his new album Never Going Back isn't lost on Collin Raye. His new songs may subtly recall the great, organic music of a bygone era but instead of stepping back in time he pulls the sound right up into the future. At a time when pop hits are built by teams of master songwriters and musicians, Never Going Back (released April 28th on Time Life) is a welcome return to the art of the artist.
Mixing up the laid back rock and folk of mid-seventies Southern California with country and rock n' roll, Raye creates a sophisticated and diverse album for the music fan who cheered when The Eagles won a country music Grammy. Never Going Back evokes the spirit of the day when an artist could record an album and perform it just as it sounds in a smoky club or on a stadium stage. No dancers, no pyrotechnics, no backing tracks and overdubs, just great songs by a great artist. “Before this, I'd never done an album where I've wanted to immediately go out and perform the whole thing,” explains Raye. Recorded in Alabama's historic Muscle Shoals, the album feels guided by the ghosts of the country, rock, blues and pop albums that the region cultivated throughout the 70s.
From the roaring, feel-good romp of “Mid Life Chrysler” to the powerful reworking of “Without You,” a duet with Grammy nominee Susan Ashton, Never Going Back bears another trademark of the LP years; a great listen from start to finish. While every tune is as finely crafted as the next, one song, in particular, remains unforgettable. The intensely personal “She's With Me,” written by Raye for his severely neurologically ill granddaughter, is a poignant song of unconditional love.
“This is the album I've always wanted to do,” says Raye, a weighty statement from the man who has four #1 Billboard country singles, 21 Top 10, four platinum albums, three AC hits, several CMA and ACM nominations and years of sold out tours already under his belt. And true to his word, he'll head out on tour right as Never Going Back is released, ready to play every single track onstage each night.
Mac McAnally's new single "You First"
April 29, 2009
Newly signed Show Dog Nashville recording artist and eminently respected music maker Mac McAnally has pledged to donate all his artist royalties from his debut single "You First" released on April 27 to the Wounded Warriors Project, whose mission is to honor and empower wounded warriors.
The commitment to helping wounded soldiers fits well with the song's theme of brotherly love. The single, which is available through all digital music retailers, is prelude to a full album expected to be completed in June as McAnally works recording into his touring schedule.
A longtime member of Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer band, Mac has been on the road much of this year. Beyond his artist career, musician commitments and other musical endeavors, McAnally is well known as one of the most successful songwriters of his era. And to that end he will be performing May 1 and 2 in Key West at performing rights organization ASCAP's annual songwriter's festival. Of course, it was Mac who wrote the recent No. 1 hit "Down The Road" for Kenny Chesney. And Chesney is so enamored of Mac's hugely successful body of work he brought him into the studio to add his vocals to the song.
"Mac McAnally is the best kind of songwriter," Chesney said recently. "With a couple chords and few lines, he opens up whole worlds... worlds that are exactly where you came from, places you know by heart and people who made you who you are today. It is so simple, yet nobody else can take you to those places -- or make you feel so at home in the space of three minutes. But that's why Mac is the songwriter everybody wishes they could be." And with the release of "You First" and the donation of its proceeds to those in need, Mac McAnally has the chance to contribute even more than he already has with music alone.
About Wounded Warrior Project: Wounded Warrior Project is a non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and empower wounded warriors. WWP serves to raise awareness and enlist the public's aid for the needs of severely injured service men and women, to help severely injured service members aid and assist each other and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet their needs. The return of Michael Sembello...
April 28, 2009
Over the past year, Michael Sembello penned three songs with Michael Lington on his album "Heat" which was released to strong reviews and nominated as Jazztrax Album of the Year for 2008. They include the up-tempo and summery Ocean Drive (think: South Beach fun in the sun), hauntingly beautiful ballad Nostalgia; and breezy, Brazilian flavored Chuva, meaning ‘rain’ in Portuguese.
Michael Sembello travels to Brazil frequently and is good friends with Daniel Jobim, the grandson of legendary composer Antonio Carlos Jobim. Who in the 1950’s combined Brazilian music with Jazz and Classical creating the traditional Bossa Nova sound. Chuva’s composition began on the vintage piano where the elder Jobim composed his classic, "The Girl From Ipanema".
Within the next few months, Michael will begin touring live throughout the United States and Japan. In mid 2009, EMI is scheduled to release “Bossa Nova Hotel” in Japan. This remarkable work is a fusion of Brazilian, Bossa Nova and Samba blended with R&B Soul. Today, as always, you can always expect magic from Michael Sembello as he has introduced a brilliant and inspiring genre of music called “Bossa-Soul”.
Michael Sembello is considered to be among the elite group of musicians comprising the West Coast Blue Eyed Soul sound.
Pat McGee "These days (The Virginia Sessions)"
April 20, 2009
Pat McGee, after nearly fourteen years of touring, feels the need to mix things up a little bit.
The namesake and leader of the Pat McGee Band may only be going by his own name when he performs these days, but it does'nt mean the band itself is finished. "We recently decided to change how we do things," says McGee. "I have been doing some solo, duo, and trio touring, in addition to full band dates. It keeps things interesting."
This shift and Pat's revolving live lineups will give fans some variations in the live setting that are sure to please.
With the full national release of "These Days (The Virginia Sessions)" released on March 10, 2009, McGee was able to whet fans's appetites for some new music with the iTunes-only release of "Live From The Southland" in January 2009. The recording was made at Eddie's Attic in Decatur, GA, and charted at #5 on the iTunes Rock Chart. "While I continue the work on my next record, due out later this year, "These Days" will finally get the full release we always hoped it would have," says McGee of the album that was previously only sold at band concerts.
A song from the record, "Come Back Home," will be serviced to radio as well as well as to the United States Armed Forces, who will be able to download the track for free. "I wrote "Come Back Home" with "These Days" producer Todd Wright," says McGee. "It started off as a story about the distance between a military couple & those many miles and oceans apart, stretches of time. As we were working on that track, the band suffered a major blow. Our longtime drummer and friend of over twelve years, Chris Williams, died suddenly. We were shaken to the core, and his family was devastated. So, the lyrical content of the song was crafted to tell both stories: being away from someone you love and also hearing the news of their passing and just not wanting to believe it all."

"Orchestral Songs" is a CD of songs written for Voice and Orchestra Rob Mathes recorded over the last decade, much of it in London at the famed Abbey Road Studios. Rob has recently conducted the Philadelphia Orchestra, been commissioned to write piece for The Los Angeles Philharmonic and for The National Symphony featuring famed conductor Leonard Slatkin.
Rob Mathes has been writing his own little brand of blues drenched spiritual Pop for years and yet has increasingly become known in the industry for other things. Having grown up in a family of musicians, Rob has known how to orchestrate and arrange since he was a kid.
