Discover Native Window, the new band project by Kansas members.

NATIVEW

Not long ago, the members of Kansas found themselves in a bit of an uncertain situation, to say the least. "Three to four years ago, the main writers for Kansas - Steve Walsh and Kerry Livgren - stated that they would no longer be writing for the band Kansas," explains drummer Phil Ehart. "That didn't mean that Kerry might not write a song or two for a special project, but that the two of them were done writing any album length material for Kansas. The four of us decided that we were not done yet, and Native Window was born to scratch that 'new material itch'."

Soon after, Ehart found himself with his other Kansas bandmates, Richard Williams (guitar), Billy Greer (vocals/bass), David Ragsdale (violin), to see if the non-Walsh fronted line-up could work. It turns out it certainly can, according to Ehart. "We had no idea what it would sound like! We had one criteria - the song had to sound good acoustically. If it sounded good with just acoustic guitar and vocals, then we developed it from there."

CdOn June 23rd, Native Window released their self-titled debut album via StarCity Records (run by Jeff Glixman, who produced some of Kansas best-selling releases). Produced by Steve Rawls and Native Window, the album will certainly grab the attention of longtime Kansas fans, as well as admirers of smartly penned, melodic rock. "We could all carry a tune and sing in pitch," says Ehart, "But could we actually sound good together? It took some work to get over the hump of singing harmonies, but once we did, you couldn't shut us up! The lyrics were a total group effort. Someone would have a title, a one liner, a chorus, and the lyrics just sprung from there. Sometimes Billy would have a bunch of lyrical ideas, and we'd brainstorm from there." Greer himself also offers nothing but praise about the newly launched band. "The writing and recording process on this project was more rewarding and fun than any I have been involved in a very long time. Vocally, this was one of the most challenging and rewarding CD's I have ever recorded!"

Bill Champlin leaves Chicago

Regarding the article by Ed Payne at CNN.com, Classic pop rock band Chicago and Grammy-Award-winning songwriter Bill Champlin have parted ways after nearly three decades together.

"After 28 years with Chicago, singer-songwriter-keyboardist Bill Champlin is parting ways with the classic jazz/rock band to focus once again on his solo career," Champlin's publicist Judi Kerr said of the split. "This music is callin' me," said Champlin, whose new solo album "No Place Left to Fall" was released last week on the DreamMakers label. "I'm really looking forward to playing more intimate venues and hearing what fans think of the new music. I can't wait to spend some one-on-one time with my old and new fans!" Champlin has scheduled a string of concerts along the West Coast in November to promote the new album.

Lou Pardini, a Grammy-nominated keyboardist who has played with Stevie Wonder and Santana, will replace Champlin, according to Chicago's management.

Guitar, studio wizard Les Paul dies at 94

Lespaul

Les Paul, whose innovations with the electric guitar and studio technology made him one of the most important figures in recorded music, has died, according to a statement from his publicists. Paul was 94.

Les Paul, whose innovations helped give rise to modern pop music, played guitar into his 90s. Paul died in White Plains, New York, from complications of severe pneumonia, according to the statement.

Paul was a guitar and electronics mastermind whose creations -- such as multitrack recording, tape delay and the solid-body guitar that bears his name, the Gibson Les Paul -- helped give rise to modern popular music, including rock 'n' roll. No slouch on the guitar himself, he continued playing at clubs into his 90s despite being hampered by arthritis.

Avenue Of Allies Music releases FabBox & Toja...

Avenue

Two new releases due September 11 via Avenue Of Allies Music:
"The first album is the great Westcoast AOR gem "Music From The Fab Box" by the Italian Duo. Westcoast AOR with Pop leanings is the trademark of the debut album of Fab Box. The Italian duo has a knack to create highly melodic songs, showcasing a winning combination composed of super catchy hook lines, vocal harmonies with guitar riffs and solos, all based on a foundation of acoustic guitars. The outcome is a striking rock album, rooted in the sound of The Eagles, Little River Band and Orleans, that will appeal to fans of Richard Marx, John Waite, Rick Price, King Of Hearts, Mark Spiro, as well as to devotees of Bryan Adams, Glass Tiger, BB Mak and Toto. The album includes the song "Together" (co-written with Joseph Williams, former lead vocalist of Toto) and "Always" (co-written with Danny Vaughn, lead singer of Tyketto and From The Inside)

The second September release comes from the German Heavy Rockers ToJa. "Train Of Life" is the third album by German Heavy Rockers ToJa and their most ambitious one to date. The band has created ten songs with an impressive musical range, pushing back the common genre boundaries. The powerful tracks will appeal as well to fans of Gotthard and Zeno, Kamelot and Masterplan, as to followers of classic stuff by the likes of Judas Priest, Savatage and Accept. ToJa admirably manages to create a Rock solid musical unit of hymn like Melodic Rock songs, fast paced Heavy Rockers, acoustic ballads and sophisticated epics with pompous orchestral parts.
