Cheryl Barnes "Listen To This"

Barnes

Cheryl Dyrithe Barnes is a classically trained jazz singer in possession of remarkable depth, range and technique. Beloved around the world as a captivating live performer, Cheryl shied away from making records for nearly a decade. Now in 2015, Ms Barnes returns with her 4th and finest album to date, a studio recording entitled "Listen To This" for which every one of the 12 selections is a personally inspired gem. Produced by Rahn Coleman and also featuring the impassioned piano playing of her husband Phil Cabasso,

"Listen To This" was patiently rendered over a 5-year period, prepared with tender loving care utilizing Los Angeles’ finest, including soloists saxophonists Rickey Woodard and Pete Christlieb, pianists John Hammond and Joel Scott, and trumpeter Nolan Shaheed.

"Listen To This" moves from 2 tunes penned by Mark Winkler (the sassy “Like Jazz” and the evocative nostalgia of “That Afternoon In Harlem” to inventive adaptations of “When I Am Laid In Earth” (from Henry Purcell’s opera “Dido & Aeneas”) and Joni Mitchell’s epic “Come in From the Cold”. There’s even a Christmas song. “I love how varied the album is, because I’m varied”, Cheryl beams. “The complexity of jazz, of improvisation, expression and harmony, is clearly there. Rahn, Phil and our engineer Aaron Testerman spent hours, I’m talking marathon sessions, working”, Cheryl shares. “Phil would come home with his eyes like x's! We didn’t have a deadline so we never rushed. A beautiful evolution blossomed through the process”.

From the hippest of contemporary faire like “Come With Me” and “What’s On Your Mind” to choice standards such as “I Wish You Love” (dedicated to the memory of Gloria Lynne) and “Why Did I Choose You” (inspired by Barbra Streisand’s rendition), Ms Barnes brings a singular warmth and empathy to every line she sings, engaging listeners from a purr to a power belt. The title track “Listen To This” (composed and arranged by Cabasso), “What’s Fair In Love” (created and directed by Coleman) and “Baby’s Got Some Awful Kind Of Blues” (crafted by John Hammond) are renderings of original pieces that are sure to go down as Cheryl Barnes classics. “This project solidifies within myself my view of myself as a true artist”, Cheryl poetically states.

Cleveland-native, and now living in Southern California, Cheryl Barnes harbors fond memories of music’s presence throughout her early life. “My father, Calvert Barnes, played music 24 hours a day in the house from his collection of old 78's and LPs, all the big bands, all the singers, all the jazz. Then on the radio he enjoyed the rich beautiful melodies of Mantovani and the 101 Strings. No rock 'n' roll allowed in the house.” Raised Catholic, Cheryl, unlike many Black singers, did not grow up in gospel yet sought and loved that and all music just the same.

Beginning at age 9 through college, Cheryl amassed 16 years of formal classical vocal training which led to appearances with symphony orchestras in Denver, Florida and Wisconsin. The rigorous programming reinforced her innate abilities and enabled her to move with ease between musical genres. Yet the road always led back to jazz. Cheryl confesses. “I have great respect for those that live the discipline of classical music like my cousin Thomas Young (the esteemed classical tenor and educator) who once told me, ‘classical singing is an athletic event’. I used the music that I learned from classical but never felt like if I sing that, I couldn’t sing this. I don’t sing like Leontyne Price or Renee Fleming, but I can sing that music. I sing jazz with strengthened abilities. And people have taken notice”.

The late iconic jazz critic Leonard Feather once wrote in the Los Angeles Times, “Barnes' range leapt upward in unpredictable octave jumps to a pure register". Renowned concert and television musical director Rickey Minor marvels, “Cheryl’s voice is sultry and full of soul, you’ll be instantly transported to a place of warmth and serenity”. Singing legend Barbara Morrison testifies, “I don’t think there is a more immaculate professional singer in the jazz world today than Cheryl Barnes. She keeps it clean and swings to the point of no return”. And the aforementioned Mark Winkler swoons, “Cheryl Barnes is a songwriter’s dream. Each song becomes an emotional story that touches, moves or just plain makes you smile”.

Ms Barnes is the quintessential performer, wowing audiences worldwide with her unerring sense for creating and sustaining a musical and personal rapport, be it within intimate club settings or commanding concert stages. The lady has shared the stage with Quincy Jones, Wynton Marsalis, Lou Rawls, JJ Johnson and Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr. In Los Angeles, she has performed in acclaimed venues including the Parisian Room, Memory Lane, The Baked Potato, the Jazz Bakery and Catalina Bar & Grill. Backing her live and in the studio have been some of the finest in jazz, among them bassists James Hughart, Tony Dumas, David LeVray and Robert Russell, drummers Ralph Penland, Quentin Dennard and Kendall Kaye, pianist Bill Cunliffe, and trumpeter Carl Saunders.

“I really appreciate being respected by instrumentalists because I consider myself a musician", Cheryl concludes. “I sing because I must. I am compelled from within, the force sometimes ebbing, often flowing, the rhythm of it all out of my hands. I follow where it leads, it is an essential part of my being”.

China Sky "II"

Chinasky

A lot can change in 25 years.

Countless fashion trends have come and gone. The Soviet Union ceased to exist. MTV stopped playing music videos. People began to explore a whole new universe called "the internet", and a forgotten album by a group called China Sky became a cult classic. Things were looking up in September 1988 for a group of young, idealistic rock musicians in Jacksonville, Florida, who had been relentlessly pursuing the dream of becoming the next arena rock powerhouse. This was the moment they had been waiting for. They had come together from all over the eastern United States with one purpose: to make the greatest rock album of the decade.

After years spent in a sweat-soaked rehearsal hall writing, recording, submitting demos; being critiqued and rejected; rehearsing eight hours a day, five days a week; they had finally landed that big record deal. The culmination of all their efforts, the fruit of all the years of sweat and toil, the self-titled album, China Sky, was about to be released, on a major label. With its soaring melodies, lush harmonies and flawless production, China Sky seemed destined to be a rock classic from the get-go. Grammy winning Bee Gees producer Karl Richardson headed up a production team that also featured celebrated composer Frank Wildhorn, and a young Bob Marlette, who later went on to work with Black Sabbath, Marilyn Manson, Seether, Shinedown, and dozens of others. How could it go wrong?

All of the pieces appeared to be in place: the players, the producers, the music, the management, the record label… Upon release, the album's first single, "The Glory," immediately began to receive radio airplay all over the US and Canada. Records were flying off the shelves in Europe and Japan. Derek Oliver raved in Kerrang Magazine. When the second single, "Some Kind Of Miracle," was released, more and more radio stations began to add China Sky. "Some Kind Of Miracle" was beginning to move into heavy rotation in key markets. The band played one-off gigs in preparation for the coming tour. Success was just around the corner! Six weeks later, the band China Sky was no more. Just what happened was never completely clear to anyone. Constant pressure from the record label left everyone feeling that the band had been hijacked by men in suits, who then refused to properly promote the album.

Superstars Michael Jackson and Bruce Springsteen were sucking up most of the label's promotional resources, and there was very little left for unproven new bands. Major blunders by management threw the band into turmoil, and tentative tour dates with major acts started to fall through. When the suits caught wind of what was happening, China Sky was relegated to the back burner. After years of struggling to get to this point, the wheels had come completely off in just a few short weeks. With no tour to support the airplay they were receiving, insufficient promotion, poor management, and simmering disagreements between band members, the situation had become so broken that continuing was futile. The members of China Sky decided to cut their losses and bail out, leaving the promise of everything for which they had worked so hard unfulfilled.

TRISTAN "Full Power"

Tristan

With the successful release of our debut album "Full Power" it's been like a chain reaction of positive response, reviews and airplay. Tristan hit nr.1 on the UK soul-charts and got to do a whole bunch of great live performances as headlining act as well as being the support band for Incognito. "Full Power" will now also be available as special edition in Japan!

''The best of the seventies brought to 2014'' is what TOTO guitarist and singer Steve Lukather came up with when he heard the music of TRISTAN!

A new chapter is about to unfold for us: The follow up album entitled '2nd Phase" is already in an advanced stage. In January 2015 we will put out the first single (“Finally Found “ a duet with USA soul-singer Heston) in Holland, Germany and the UK while the album release is set for March 2015.

Tristan's music can best be described as feel good vintage Acid Jazz music with the energy, vibe and sound of 2014 by some of today’s best contemporary pop/jazz musicians from Europe. Funky rhythm- guitars, Hammonds, Fender Rhodes and synths, and a rhythm section that has been playing together for decades. All this gives singer Evelyn Kallansee the solid ground to make her beautiful vocal sound shine. It will bring you back to that great sound of the seventies. Well produced recordings and live performances often joined by a hornsection, a string section and a host of backing vocalists. While the music may hold clear echo's from bands like Tower of Power, Snarky Puppy and classic acid jazz acts like Incognito and Brand New Heavies, what makes this band really stand out is the high energy of the grooves and the quality of the writing and arranging.

Tristan - Full Power was a startling fresh debut album from a band consisting of real musicians. If you like plastic-made-up music by artists that have been processed and autotuned to death then this album may not be your cup of tea. If you on the other hand like well written live played and intelligently arranged Acid Jazz performed by great musicians this might just be the album you are looking for! "2nd Phase" will very much be in the same league of quality and perfection without holding back on budgets nor artistry!

FM "Heroes and Villains”

FM

“Heroes and Villains” is FM’s much anticipated ninth original studio album, which follows the band’s celebration in 2014 of their 30th Anniversary and the successful release of the “Rockville” albums in 2013.

Comprising the ex-Samson pair of bassist Merv Goldsworthy and drummer Pete Jupp; the Overland brothers –vocalist/guitarist Steve and lead guitarist Chris - plus the keyboard talents of Philip Manchester (AKA sci-fi nutcase Didge Digital), FM's first public appearance on Valentine’s Day of 1985 was swiftly followed by the release of their debut album, “Indiscreet”.  FM hit the road in Europe supporting the likes of Tina Turner, Meat Loaf, Foreigner, Gary Moore, Status Quo and the white-hot Bon Jovi on the ‘Slippery When Wet’ tour.

For the next 12 years FM consolidated their position at the forefront of British melodic rock, touring everywhere they could to promote releases such as 1989's “Tough It Out” and 1992's “Aphrodisiac”.  In1996, with 'grunge' fever sweeping the world, the band decided to call it a day... until October 2007, when FM at last played together again for the first time in 12 years, headlining a sold-out Firefest IV at Nottingham Rock City, showcasing new guitarist Jim Kirkpatrick.

This was followed in March 2010 by the release of their much-anticipated sixth studio album “Metropolis”. The next 4 years saw FM touring extensively including tours with Thin Lizzy, Foreigner and Europe and festivals with acts like Toto, Survivor at Graspop, Sweden Rock, Loreley and Download Festival for the second time. For the first time in their history they also had songs play listed on national radio in the UK including "Story Of My Life”  and “Better Late Than never” on BBC Radio 2.

The new album sees FM staying true to their musical legacy offering their classic sound updated in 2015 with great songwriting and performances and of course the “golden voice” of Steve Overland. Another gem of an album which is undoubtedly going to please all the fans.

Richie Furay "Hand In Hand"

After leaving Souther Hilman Furay, Richie went on a spiritual journey which led him in 1983 to became senior pastor of the Calvary Chapel in Broomfield, Colorado, a non-sectarian Christian church in the Denver area. Richie continued to tour with his own band and also carved out a very successful career in Christian Music.

Peter Blachley "Nevada Sky"

BLACHLEY

Nevada Sky documents a life of inspiration, reinvention, and marks a profound coming together of many of the facets of Blachley’s life—family, photography, music, loves won and lost, and professional and personal aspirations.

In Blachley’s journey, he’s been a carpenter and served in Vietnam. His second act was being a music video pioneer through making culture-defining videos with the Stray Cats, George Thorogood, and Duran Duran as an executive producer/marketing visionary. During this time, Blachley worked at Capitol/EMI, and he went from the mailroom up to being music a marketing exec before cross-fading to EMI’s Picture Music International as music video division executive, content producer and marketerer. At 50, his music business tenure ended, and he reinvented himself as a gallery owner, co-finding the fine art music photography gallery the Morrison Hotel Gallery with partners Richard Horowitz and iconic photographer Henry Diltz.

There is hope in the fact that you can always reinvent yourself. Reinventing is about finding something you want to do everyday, something that makes you happy, and finding a way to make money doing it,Blachley says.

For his third act, Peter Blachley is emerging as a captivating singer-songwriter with his debut album,Nevada Sky. It’s one of those storyteller albums that instantly feel like an old friend. It recalls the work of CSN, John Stewart, Neil Young, Waylon Jennings, and Ian Tyson. It stretches across the highways of high lonesome country, confessional folk, and swampy rock n’ roll.  And it authentically evokes the rugged mountains and big open skies of the West, and the burly swagger of the big cities of the east—it is pure Americana through and through.

Andrew Maxwell Morris "Well Tread Roads"

AMM

Meet Andrew Maxwell Morris, a singer-songwriter and composer, a full time criminal lawyer and a well travelled soul. Andrew has just released his debut album "Well Tread Roads". It is a project that explores the highs and lows of creating music with the demands of a full time job, giving up evenings and weekends and being dedicated to the task. The album was written and arranged in Andrew’s bedroom. It was taken on, mixed and post produced by Jordan Critz, in Dallas, Texas.

Andrew was born in Melbourne, Australia. His love for music began age 5, placed at a piano and brought into the world of traditional folk music. He wrote his first song at 12, taught himself the drums and guitar when he was 13. Songwriting always came easy. He developed a love of 7O’s Laurel Canyon artists, James Taylor, Jackson Browne, Eagles and later a fascination with Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen.

"Well Tread Roads" explores depression, a longing for family and a desire to carve out his own path through the title song, "Well Tread Roads". It is a rollercoaster of driving pop-folk and acoustic songs, each with its own identity. As well as his album and two EP’s, Andrew has had success with music placements in TV adverts for two major brands, 'Thatcher’s Cider' and 'Vodafone'. He has written for production music companies and films around the world.
